Here's How You Can Turn A Placemat Into A Throw Pillow Cover Without Sewing

Oct 01, 2023

It's not always easy to choose the best throw pillows for your home, especially since some can be rather expensive. Fortunately, you can use a particular DIY project to make your own pillow cover with a placemat. Although this may seem strange or a bit daunting, especially if you're not particularly good with a needle and thread, this super-easy task doesn't require any sewing.

Shared on social media by TikTok user @kourtneynilsen, all you need is a pair of scissors and a single fabric placemat that's roughly the same size as your pillow. The placemat must be made with two layers — often a more decorative front and a solid backing or a two-sided reversible design — that are sewn together at the edges. Although you could always opt for something fancy (or pricey), there are plenty of incredibly affordable placemats that can end up complementing your furniture. Next, grab an old or worn-out throw pillow you'd like to transform with a few quick and easy steps. In fact, this is so simple and stylish that you might end up wanting to make a new cover for every pillow in your home.

Get ready to fall in love with the easy yet effective trick that will transform a placement into a stunning throw pillow cover. It will be hard not to when you complete this task within minutes and see the fabulous result. Start by flipping your placemat over so that you're looking at the back of it. Next, take your scissors and cut through the back piece of fabric, ensuring you're not also slicing through the top layer on the front of the pillow cover. You also want to cut the material in a straight line down the middle — you can decide whether a horizontal or vertical cut will work best with the placemat you're using.

Use the new opening you've made to slide the old pillow inside the placemat the same way you would with any other cover while ensuring that it fills out each side and corner. Smooth the fabric out nicely, and you're all done. Toss that newly covered pillow on your couch, side chair, or bed, and appreciate how pretty it is and your DIY skills. Of course, if you find that the opening in the back is bothering you, there's another quick and easy step that you can take to fix this issue without sewing.

You don't have to find your old sewing machine or borrow one from a friend to close the opening of your placemat throw pillow cover. Instead, pick up velcro strips. You can either use something that already has an adhesive or attach the velcro strips with fabric glue. When you have everything you need, cut the velcro strips into the length of the opening as well as to a width that will suit your cover. You don't want it to be too wide or thin; otherwise, it may not work well. Now, apply glue, if necessary, to one side of the velcro before placing it onto the inner edge of one side of the cover's opening.

Follow that by applying the other side of the strip to the outer edge on the other side of the opening. Press the velcro into place so that it grips the fabric, and leave the cover alone for a few minutes to allow the glue or adhesive to dry before closing the opening. This additional task should only tack on a few minutes to your entire DIY project, which will likely take about 10 to 15 minutes overall to complete. On the other hand, it could be much longer if you take your time and have fun with it.
