Any frequent traveler knows your personal belongings run the risk of getting a bit banged up in transit. That’s why we recommend investing in protective reinforcements, especially for your most essential document — a passport. (Remember, if you lose or damage your passport, you may not be able to board a plane at all.) Enter the passport cover: a handy slip pocket accessory which can help protect your passport against travel-related snafus and regular wear and tear. But, to find the one that best suits your specific needs, you’ll want to consider a variety of factors including material, storage options and organization, and design.

Our top picks are expertly crafted, highly durable, and securely keep your belongings in place. If you had something specific in mind — for instance, a waterproof fabric or a multi-passport holder — read on because we have those, too. Our comprehensive list covers every kind of passport cover you’d need.

The sustainably crafted cover is stylish, sturdy, and customizable.

It’s pricier than many of the items on our list.

For a passport cover that truly has it all, look no further than Paravel’s Cabana Passport Case. In terms of function, the slim cover has a slot for your passport in addition to eight smaller slots which can hold credit and debit cards, subway cards, your ID, and some cash (with extra room to spare). It’s an easy way to keep valuable items organized while away, without having to lug a bulkier travel wallet. It also snaps shut to keep your belongings from spilling out.

But what really sets this case apart is how it’s crafted. The stylish exterior — which is available in four colorways — features decorative horizontal stripes over a canvas fabric, giving it a vacation-ready appearance. Better yet, the fabric is durable, spill-proof, stain repellent, and made from upcycled plastic bottles. Inside, you’ll find sleek recycled vegan leather and the Paravel name embossed in gold. You can even personalize your case by adding a hand-painted monogram in one of 11 colors — or a hand-painted emoji with options like a pineapple, a cactus, or a rocketship.

The luxury accessory boasts Bottega Veneta’s signature woven design.

It’s not as durable as some of the other options on our list.

If you’re up for a splurge on a designer accessory, consider Bottega Veneta’s luxurious Italian-made option. The eye-catching design is sure to be noticed by passersby as you stroll through the airport. The buttery-soft calfskin leather exterior features the brand’s iconic weave pattern in sleek black or vibrant, statement-making green. Inside, you’ll find a passport slot on one side and five card slots plus another slip pocket on the other. It keeps credit or debit cards, IDs, subway cards, and more organized for easy access.

Its thick PVC-free film is not only waterproof, but also puncture-proof.

This case won’t have space for much beyond your passport.

Travel-related spills are a common mishap, whether it’s due to hand sanitizer accidentally unscrewing and leaking in your bag or a bout of turbulence knocking the beverage off your tray table. It’s wise to invest in a cover that can repel a bit of liquid contact to help protect the pages of your passport. This pick from Seattle Sports is totally waterproof thanks to a puncture-proof film that can be fully sealed via a snap-zip closure. Beyond water, the clear case offers protection from sand and dust.

It’s made from a recycled leather that softens over time.

The leather is very stiff at first.

This multicolored passport case was created from recycled leather by an Argentinian company that manufactures sustainably produced leather goods. The leather is made using a patented process that involves grinding down the leather off-cuts into a powder, which is then reconstituted into a new material. Still, there’s nothing “old” about the colorblock design, available in rust/pink and blue/red/yellow varieties. It has two pockets for the passport itself, as well as a flap pocket under the front cover and two card-sized pockets in the back. Don’t worry too much about damaging the aesthetically pleasing design: It has a protective surface that makes it easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

The classic design is elegant and timeless.

You may want to invest in the brand’s leather cleaner and conditioner to keep this item in top shape.

If you prefer your accessories to be made from high-quality leather, Leatherology’s selection is always a great bet. This jet-set-ready style features a finely grained texture and a buttery soft feel, and it’s available in six timeless hues (think: burgundy, camel, scarlet). You can even personalize it with up to four debossed characters in three metallic shades (or no color), or up to two hand painted letters available in 14 colors. The six-pocket design can be upgraded for an added fee with RFID blocking or premium rustic and firm leather. You can spot clean it with a damp cloth or use the brand’s leather cleaner and conditioner to maintain the beautiful texture and softness.

The vegan leather shell is super soft to the touch, and there are so many ways to customize it.

The website doesn’t list the number of interior pockets.

For those who gravitate towards vegan leather, Mark & Graham’s Fillmore case is a solid choice. Like all of Mark & Graham’s offerings, the vegan leather cover is made to be customized. It’s available in five classic colors including black, blush, navy, camel, and poppy, which can all be personalized with a variety of monogram styles for an additional fee. There are a whopping 20 monogram colors available, which can have between one and three letters. Or, choose from five sport-centric designs which can include up to two letters. You can even invest in a matching luggage tag (with the same number of color and monogram styles available) to make it a set. Because of the customization options, this passport cover is also ideal for gifting.

The elegant set makes it easy to coordinate your travel accessories.

There are no additional card slots.

While you’re on the hunt for the perfect passport cover, you might be interested in snagging a matching luggage tag for a coordinated look. This set, which comes in five classic color options, gives your travel accessories elegance and style. Crafted from pebbled leather, the case has the word “passport” embossed across the front, while the luggage tag features gold hardware and an exterior flap to conceal your personal information. The canvas-lined interior offers slots only for the passport itself. You can add your name or a monogram in multiple font and color options for an additional cost.

It's large enough to hold up to six passports and has a nifty hand strap.

It’s the bulkiest item on our list.

When traveling with kids, it’s a smart idea to hold onto their documents for them. But to keep from carrying multiple passports in separate cases, here is a handy case that holds four different passports all in one. (The brand also makes options for a two-passport case or a six-passport case, depending on the size of your family.) All four passport slots sit on one side of the book, while the other has a mesh zippered compartment for loose change, cards, and other necessities. There’s even a slot for boarding passes and a pen holder. Our favorite feature, though, is a top handle that makes toting the pebbled leather zip-around case a breeze. It comes in black, camel, or red, and can be monogrammed in gold foil with up to three characters for an added fee.

There are 16 unique patterns to choose from.

It doesn’t zip or snap shut.

If you’re traveling with kids who are old enough to be responsible for their own passports, you may want to give them a vibrant protective case, which makes the essential document easier to find in a bag. This vegan leather holder comes in 16 different designs like a blue flight map, a Parisian-inspired pattern, and a bevy of adorable pugs. This slim, lightweight case does not have any additional pockets beyond those designed for the passport.

It snaps shut and has RFID blocking for added security.

The Apple AirTag is sold separately.

If you’re the type of person who tends to lose track of their keys, wallet, and things of that nature, you might be already familiar with AirTag holders. Consequently, you may find it worth investing in a passport holder with an AirTag attached. This leather accessory has three additional card slots and a larger slip pocket to store other travel documents such as a boarding pass — and of course, there’s a compartment on the back to secure an Apple AirTag. (For those who aren’t aware, an AirTag is a tiny GPS tracker that can help you zero in on the location of a lost item through the Find My app.) For added security, there is a snap closure and the holder is equipped with RFID technology.

As with any item used frequently, a passport cover is bound to get a little banged up as it changes hands through security or gets shoved in your bag as you rush to collect your belongings from the conveyor belt or overhead bin. For this reason, it’s wise to consider durable fabrics that can withstand a bit of wear and tear and therefore better protect your passport. Water-resistant materials are also beneficial, especially in passport covers which completely seal shut as that can fully shield the pages of your passport from accidental spills or splashes.

Clasps, snaps, and zippers can also up the protection as they keep your items more secure and less likely to fall out. The more items you’re storing in your passport case other than your passport, the more beneficial closure becomes.

Passport covers are often more than their name implies. Many include additional storage for other most-reached-for items such as credit cards, vaccine cards, boarding passes, or pens. Take your specific organizational needs into consideration when purchasing a passport cover, noting that the more items you plan to carry, the bulkier the holder becomes.

If you’re looking to store more than just a card or two, consider investing in a passport wallet instead of a simple passport cover. While bulkier, passport wallets offer much more storage and can usually accommodate all your credit cards, cash, transit cards, IDs, and more — along at least one passport of course. If a passport wallet is more suited to your needs, you can consult our comprehensive list of the best passport wallets.

Passport covers are allowed as you meander through the airport, but you’ll likely need to remove your passport from the case when you go through security. Keep in mind that fiddling to remove the passport from the cover can slow you (and everyone behind you) down in the security line. Therefore, we recommend removing your passport from the holder when the person a few spots ahead of you is next in line.

In short, no. The reliability of RFID-blocking technology is hard to measure since real-world skimming situations are tough to replicate in lab scenarios. Statistics suggest that this kind of theft is relatively rare — however, if you want to play it extra safe, it doesn’t hurt to have an RFID-protected cover just in case.

While having a cover for your passport is always optional, it is highly recommended. Not only does it protect your passport from normal wear and tear, but it also a great item to help organize other travel documents like visas, vaccination cards and luggage receipts.
